Welcome to the K Kids blog, dachshund lovers! It is a terrific coincidence that the launch of our blog coincides with our first two rescues!
Recently, Linda and Andrew picked up a double dapple puppy from the Chesterfield VA shelter -- a blind pup with no name. After a two week quarantine for kennel cough courtesy of her foster parents, she visited a doggie ophthalmologist to check out any possibilites of regaining some of her eyesight. Although that is not to be because of the double dapple factor, she did get some drops which may help things a little and she does see light, dark and some shadows -- and that makes our hearts sing. She is a happy girl always bouncing around...check out her videos on our Facebook page!
The very next day, Morgan (another great foster) and I pulled K Kid Number Two from my local shelter in Lyndhurst VA. L’il Joe is a senior dachshund mix -- we believe part dachshund, part Jack Russell terrier and a little bit of chihuahua -- who had been dumped at the shelter by the only owner he ever had. He was in excruciating pain from rotten teeth. He was immediately put on an antibiotic and the next week he was neutered and he got a badly needed dental, including a repair of a hole in his gums (called a fistula). He lost his remaining six teeth and most importantly, he is no longer in pain. He is learning to eat with no teeth (it's pretty easy for dogs, really) and has a new lease on life. He is playing and wrestling with his other doggie buds as if he were a puppy again. Reason number two for hearts to sing.
Although I have been involved in dachshund rescue for many years, I could not have begun to imagine how humbled I would be by the knowledge that the K Kids decisions and actions, pulling these two, getting them the medical attention they need and ultimately finding great forever homes, would truly change the world for each of them. Taking care of dachshund bodies and healing dachshund spirits is as good as it gets. And so it will go for every K Kid.
We promise to be responsive to your calls for help and to respond promptly, courteously and with compassion. We promise to be kind and not to judge. We pledge to be relentless in our pursuit of whatever is best for our K Kids dachshunds. We pledge to use our funds judiciously and to be good stewards and worthy of your trust when you so generously make donations to help us help our dachshunds.
I personally commit to put to good use all the knowledge I have acquired over many years about dachshund health and dachshund behavior, including their protective tendencies and their dogged (pardon the pun) determination -- not to mention how much they despise being asked to do their business in the rain …
Over time, you will get to know the stories of the original K Kids (my dachshunds, both over the Bridge and still with me, to whom I have dedicated this new rescue venture), and you will hear from each member of our K Kids team, all of whom bring special and unique gifts to this dachshund party.
Let’s get busy saving the world -- one dachshund at a time. And let’s have some fun doing it!
